Description
LARGE BARITE CRYSTALFrizington, Cumberland, England, United Kingdom
Mineral collecting was quite 'the thing' among the aristocrats of England while Britannia ruled the waves. This was the 'Golden Age' of Science with exciting discoveries being made almost daily. For a wealthy young aristocrat there were a number of socially acceptable pursuits: collecting mineral specimens was one of them. It would have been around this time that this fine Barite specimen was first beheld by a member of the landed gentry; having been rescued from one of the several mines operating near Frizington in Cumberland. Then, as now, it would have been treasured for its subtle colors grading from blue-green at the edges to a lovely golden yellow at the tip and center. A golden yellow very similar to the brandy sipped while admiring it. Sharp and lustrous large crystals such as this one, are the product of a bygone age. A remembrance of things past, it measures a sizable 6 ¼ x 2 ½ x 1 ¼ inches; it has a custom labeled acrylic base.
