Kop Krom Mine, Kop Daglari, Erzurum Province, Eastern Anatolia Region, Turkey
It is truly unfortunate that fine Kammererite, also known as Chromian Clinochlore, is virtually a one locality mineral. All but one of the few localities for this exotic Chromian Mica, produce lackluster specimens that look like port wine stains on rock, even under a microscope. The sole exception is material from the Kop Krom Mine in Turkey, where the mineral appears as sharp and lustrous prisms that are the hue of young red wines. Greyish-black massive Chromite, the actual ore mineral sought, serves as the matrix for these delightfully brash specimens. It is also quite unfortunate that this mine is near the end of its productive lifespan. The supply of Kammererite has always been very limited and the situation is likely to get worse. This exceptional example is from the collection of the late Dr. Marvin Rausch, a well known collector who specialized in excellent quality specimens but with particular focus on cabinet to large cabinet sized pieces. The specimen bears his accession number 121. It was probably mined in the 1970's since that was when the best of the material hit the market. Larger, 1/4 inch, di-pyramidal crystals are interspersed with smaller ones down to the micro level. They are evenly distributed over the front as well as the back of the specimen. The condition is fine, with a little minor nicking - not unexpected. This material, at this level of quality, is only going to become more collectible. It measures 3½ x 3½ x 1½ inches and has a custom labeled base.
    Provenance: Marvin Rausch Collection

    Estimate: $7,000 - $9,000.
