HISTORIC CUPRITE SPECIMENTsumeb Mine (Tsumcorp Mine), Tsumeb, Otjikoto (Oshikoto) Region, Namibia
Sharp, darkly lustrous cubo-octahedrons up to 3/8 inch in size, cover the chocolate-brown limonite matrix of this fine specimen. This historic specimen dates to the early days of mining in the early 1900's, at the famed Tsumeb Mine of then; German South-West
Africa. It was part of the Washington Roebling (of Brooklyn Bridge fame) Collection that was bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institution near the beginning of the last century. It comes with the proper Smithsonian label as well as ones from Van Scriver and the Roy Smith Collection. An excellently formed and preserved historic specimen for the serious collector. It measures 2 ½ inches high by 2 ¼ inches wide by 1 7/8 inches deep. It carries the Roebling Collection accession number R17552.
