Description

Amethyst Geode "Cathedral"
Minas Gerais, Brazil

This impressive geode, often referred to as a "cathedral" for its soaring form and vaulted interior, hails from the famed volcanic deposits of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Amethyst geodes of this kind form over millions of years within ancient lava tubes. Initially, gas bubbles create hollow cavities, which later fill with mineral-rich fluids containing trace amounts of Iron. Under precise conditions of pressure and temperature, these solutions crystallize along the cavity walls-eventually forming the deep purple crystals of Amethyst. The Iron content is responsible for the signature violet coloration, which can vary in intensity across the crystal surface. The term geode, first recorded in the 1600s, originates from the French géode, itself derived from Latin and Greek roots meaning "earth." This particular specimen is notable for its broad proportions and richly encrusted interior, entirely lined with well-formed Amethyst crystals that shimmer with natural luster and depth. A commanding, decorative, and mineralogical piece, it exemplifies the geological artistry of nature.
