San Francisco Mine, Cerro Prieto, Cucurpe, Mun. de Cucurpe, Sonora, Mexico
Back in the 1970's the San Francisco Gold Mine was worked by various leasers with an eye to producing some of the Wulfenite/Mimetite crystal groups that occur there. By all accounts, several thousand specimens were recovered. Where they all went is anybody's guess since fine, large specimens like this one have become muy difficil to find. This is a classic example of the type: the Wulfenites are thin, square blades of a bright golden orange color and shining luster. The matrix is the characteristic tan limonitic gossan. There are a few broken crystals - not all that unusual in material from this locality. Otherwise in fine condition; it has a custom labeled acrylic base and measures 5 x 3 x 2 ½ inches. The largest crystal is ¾ inches on edge.
