Description

    WULFENITE with HISTORY
Erupción Mine (Ahumada Mine), Los Lamentos Mts (Sierra de Los Lamentos), Mun. de Ahumada, Chihuahua, Mexico

Historic can be applied to this classic and brilliantly lustrous example from one of the premier localities for Wulfenite. As far as history and provenance goes: in 1949 it was acquired for $40 by legendary miner, dealer, and explorer Ed Over. In 1950, it was valued at $50, and in 1967 it was re-valued to $200. This was probably when another legend in the early mineral business, E. Mitchell Gunnell, got it from Ed Over. When the Gunnell collection was sold, it then went to dealer David New, who sold his collection through Gene Schlepp of Western Minerals, who placed it into the Hoppel Collection in 1998. In appearance it is a solid mass of zoned, 'caramel' colored, Wulfenite crystals up to ½ inch on edge, completely covering a very small amount of limonite matrix - the Wulfenite crystals all exhibit very high luster. The backside shows the same coverage, but with an Endlichite coating characteristic of Ahumada pieces. The condition of this is lustrous piece of history is excellent or better, depending on your tolerance for minuscule 'Wilbers'.
    Overall measurements: 6.5 x 4.25 x 4.31 inches (16.5 x 12 x 11 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. Dave New, ex. E. Mitchell Gunnell, ex. Ed Over [Hoppel Catalog # D1699]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
