Description

Wulfenite
Jianshan Mine, Shanshan Co., Turpan, Xinjiang, China
17.2 x 8.9 x 6.8 cm (6.77 x 3.50 x 2.69 in)

Only three hundred miles south of the Mongolian-Chinese border in the vastly remote Western regions is an unassuming Iron-Manganese mine, which produced exceptional Wulfenite specimens between 2009 and 2013. This specimen is easily one of the larger pieces of this production, reaching a hefty 17 centimeters across, with prolific crystallization all along the matrix. The color is a bright orange, free of the brown staining/zones that sometimes mar specimens of this locality. Each crystal is delicate and thin, with most of the crystals having an unusual, complex shape to their edges, appearing strikingly similar to petals, or sharply formed rosettes. Even a few individual Wulfenite planes will have an interesting "layered" effect, which results in subtle but lovely color variations within each crystal. Of course, with this material, chipping is inevitable; but the overall floral character of the specimen is beautifully preserved, and many of the crystals still retain their sharp, complex edges.
