Description

    WITHERITE
Minerva No. 1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning Group, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois -Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Besides turning out stunning Fluorite specimens in multiple colors, the Fluorite mines of Hardin County, Illinois furnished some of the best examples of the rare mineral: Witherite, a carbonate of Barium. Good examples of Witherite are quite rare, as most are microscopic or simply ... grotty. Fine examples are chiefly confined to the U.K. or Illinois. This large specimen is a stubby and doubly-terminated barrel shaped crystal of off-white and translucent appearance embedded in, and on, a matrix of pastel yellow and purple Fluorite cubes with a little black Sphalerite thrown in for contrast. It was mined in the late 1960s or early 1970s from the Bethel Level of the Minerva #1 Mine. The Witherite measures a serious 1.88 inches (4.75 cm) in length and a hefty 1.5 inches (3.88 cm) in diameter. The Fluorite shows weird hollow areas where something was dissolved away leaving negative crystal cavities. The Witherite is in excellent condition with only a couple of tiny "wilbers" in evidence. The accompanying catalog note details the exact level in the mine where this specimen was found.
    Overall Measurements: 5.0 x 4.01 x 2.98 inches (12.7 x 10.2 x 7.59 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Western Minerals [Hoppel #D1700]

    Estimate: $7,500 - $8,500.
