Description

    WITHERITE
Fallowfield Mine, Acomb, Hexham, Tyne Valley, Northumberland, England, UK

With exception of Baryte, most minerals involving the element Barium are rare and exotic like the old classic seen here in a Witherite from the now defunct Fallowfield Mine in Northumberland. British Witherite: BaCO3 was an occasional resident in the Pennine ore fields where it formed six-sided pyramidal groups like this one. The colorless crystal groups are distinguished by their high specific gravity and somewhat greasy luster as well as their form. This fine and large example involves a group of 7 or 8 of those pyramids growing out from a matrix of altered limestone typical for the district. Minor obscure nicks are visible, but, otherwise, it is in excellent condition.
    Overall Measurements: 3.88 x 1.99 x 1.87 inches (9.87 x 5.06 x 4.76 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: David Crawford Minerals, ex. Chicago Museum of Natural History (Field Museum) [Hoppel #D1463]
