Sterling Mine, 430 Level, Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

The fluorescence of Franklin and Sterling Hill minerals is legendary among mineral collectors everywhere. The mines have closed, and further ore production is now out of the question. As such, large and 'exotic' versions of those minerals are quite desirable. Here we have a hefty mass of mixed composition: black and non-fluorescent - Franklinite, red fluorescing - Calcite and Green fluorescing - Willemite. It is the Willemite that makes this piece particularly interesting. Besides the disseminated blebs of Willemite, there are two veins of that mineral as well. What is interesting about them is that both of the veins show prolonged green phosphorescence after the U.V. light is turned off. In addition, there is a 'dead zone' extending out from these veins where the normal fluorescence is inhibited to a major degree.
    Overall Measurements: 10.03 x 5.35 x 2.36 inches (25.50 x 13.60 x 6.00 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Richard Bostwick Collection, Williams Minerals [Hoppel #D0752]
