280 meter level, Morococala Mine, Santa Fé Mining District, Dalence Prov., Oruro Dept., Bolivia

Vivianite has the distinction of being one of the few minerals that can form in association with biologic processes and also on a strictly inorganic basis. The Bolivian deposits are uniformly of the inorganic type associated with actual ore deposits. This adds greatly to the long-term stability of color and form. Considerably larger than normal, this double terminated crystal forms a bundle of parallel prismatic crystals of deep and transparent emerald green hue, measuring a serious 7 inches (17.78 cm) from one termination to the other. Prominent and typical cleavage surfaces decorate the 'faces' at right angles to the real ones. The heyday for Vivianite production was during the period between 1981 and 1992. The lower levels were allowed to fill back up with water, preventing any further production of Vivianite. As a result, specimens from this mine command ever-increasing respect and collector interest as time goes on. Excellent condition. Overall measurements: 7 x 1 x 1 inches (17.8 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm).

    Provenance: Schooler's [Hoppel # D0373]
