Old Bishop Watkins Mine, Lynch Station, James River-Roanoke River Manganese Dist., Campbell Co., Virginia, USA

Considering the aggregate tonnage of Turquoise residing in belts and brooches, and rings and things, it is a real eye-opener to consider just how large a container it would take to hold the currently known world supply of crystalline Turquoise. Considering just the crystals themselves, chances are the entire world supply would fit in a Fiat glove box- quite possibly with a substantial amount of room left over. The message here is that, although Turquoise is all over the place; crystals of it are not.
The classic locality for these diminutive jewels bears the wonderfully quaint name of 'Old Bishop Watkins Mine' near Lynch Station, Virginia. This choice matrix specimen offers multiple cavities and surfaces, replete with botryoidal groups of Turquoise spherules liberally splashed over the various surfaces of the piece. Accessory massive white Quartz and various iron minerals are the other components of what appears to be a breccia glued together by the Turquoise. A good microscope or loupe is advisable to get a proper eyeful of Bishop Watkins' fine product. The Turquoise crystals are in excellent condition, but the matrix features mainly broken surfaces. All levity aside, these things are about as rare as freestanding crystals of Jadeite, and that's ... really rare.
