Description

    TURQUOISE

    Turquoise
Lavender Pit, Bisbee, Warren District, Mule Mts., Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

Turquoise is formed by the conjunction of three different components: Copper, which provides the blue color, along with Aluminum and Phosphorus: which provide the basic structure that the Copper gives the sky-blue color to. This matrix Turquoise features a more or less continuous vein of deep robins-egg blue Turquoise of very even color embedded within a large, reddish-brown block of the typical host rock from the Lavender Pit. The Turquoise vein width varies from a millimeter, or so, to over 1.18 inches (3 cm) across. The piece was obviously part of a much larger block that was fractured and then, broken up. The Turquoise shows a conchoidal fracture that indicates the material is of even consistency and high hardness. Hard, consistent Bisbee material is at a premium these days and this is a very serious, and sizable, Bisbee Turquoise specimen; it is a relic of a bygone era.
    Overall Measurements: 8.5 x 4.5 x 3.5 inches (21.6 x 11.4 x 8.9 cm)

    Provenance: Ex. Sam Elkins Collection

    Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000.
