Porcupine Pocket, 2001
Pederneira Mine, São José da Safira, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The naming of specific 'pockets' encountered in mining operations is a hallowed tradition that serves to define material sharing a common origin, appearance and composition. It is also an opportunity to display creative humor on the part of the miners or owners of such specimens (q.v. "Sharon Stone," "18%," "Rocket," etc.). Among the various nicknames for pockets found in the Pederneira Mine, the "Porcupine Pocket" represents an almost archaically straightforward approach to nomenclature. Many of the Tourmaline groups from this pocket are somewhat spiny in nature. This fine example of such forms displays numerous radiating crystal groups of various sizes shooting out from a "matrix" of jumbled Tourmaline prisms showing no particular orientation. There are several sizable crystals among the group, and the largest is 4.84 inches (12.3 cm) in length with a diameter of only 0.35 inches (0.9 cm). All crystals show a blue-green body color, and a few bear an avocado green at their terminations. Transparency is high, and the fine striations serve to highlight the particularly gemmy nature of the main crystal. With few exceptions, all of the prisms are terminated and one shows a considerable bend unlike the others that are straight as rulers. A small amount of colorless Albite lurks among the bases of the Tourmaline crystals; otherwise, the specimen is made up entirely of Tourmaline. There has been a very professional repair to in-pocket fractures, so this cool and spiny wonder can still be considered in excellent condition.
