Description

    TOURMALINE
Cruzeiro Mine, São José da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Massive is probably the most apt word for this cranberry red/purple Tourmaline crystal. The deep color is just about as saturated as Tourmaline can get and is very consistent on all parts of the crystal. It was found in 1992 in the Cruzeiro Mine along with a few others of comparable size. The base of the crystal shows that it was broken off from a longer crystal long before being found by the miners. As a result, there is no matrix, only a clean fracture with a small amount of clay admixture. There are numerous inclusions just beneath the surface and some mixed mica/tourmaline intergrowths on one corner of the crystal. Luster is glassy particularly on the terminal faces and over the transparent areas. What appear to be secondary crystals are simply other faces of the one giant prism: the one separate crystal on the lower back seems to have been detached, probably by earth movements prior to pocket discovery.
