Description

    TOURMALINE with QUARTZ & LEPIDOLITE
    Bicolor Steel Pocket, 2004
Pederneira Mine, São José da Safira, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

This stunning Pederneira matrix specimen deserves close and personal examination, since the variations in color alone make it a classic example of material from the "Bicolor Steel Pocket." Starting from the Smoky Quartz fragment that serves as a matrix for the 4.72 x 0.39 inches (12.0 x 1.0 cm) Tourmaline, the discerning eye goes on a magical mystery tour beginning with a bright pink tint where the crystal leaves the enveloping Quartz and progresses upward where a kugel * marks the abrupt shift to blue-green color with limpid transparency for the remainder of the prism. In the last millimeter or so of the termination, there is a faint return to the pink tint seen initially: a remembrance of things past. The fairly dark Smoky Quartz "matrix" shows a number of sharp and undamaged faces festooned with clots of lavender Lepidolite crystals and a minor bit of bladed Feldspar on the backside. Luster for the Tourmaline is glassy and in some places 'satiny' where prominent striations give added character to the crystal. Condition is pristine when allowance is made for the ubiquitous repairs needed to restore Pederneira Tourmalines to their former positions. In this case, there is but one repair. As a lagniappe, close by the tip of the Tourmaline, is a tiny, doubly-terminated Quartz crystal off to one side - just another fine detail worthy of close examination.
    Overall measurements: 3.1 x 5.7 x 1.3 inches (7.8 x 14.5 x 3.3 cm)

    * A kugel is a typically round section of a Tourmaline prism, bounded on the exterior by stress fractures and invariably containing flawless gem material suitable for gemstones, derived from the German word for 'ball' or 'sphere.'
