Paprok, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan

This specimen has great sentimental value to Gerhard, because he bought this one himself in Pakistan in April 2005 - the photo above shows him posing with it on that trip. It is the only one he kept - until now. It is comprised of four distinct elements: Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, bladed Cleavelandite and blocky, corroded Feldspar crystals. The mix starts out with the stout, off-white Feldspar 'blocks' that are intergrown with euhedral crystals of Smoky Quartz of medium color and considerable perfection of form. Stuffed into crevices formed by the Quartz and Feldspar are globular clusters of bladed Cleavelandite. It is from this assemblage that the three Tourmalines emerge. The largest of the three is 3.03 x 1.29 inches (7.7 by 3.3 cm) in size, and two of the trio are simple, flat-topped prisms with brilliantly glassy terminations, while the smallest of the three shows evidence of in-pocket breakage and re-growth, leading to a more complex form of termination. All display "bubblegum" pink body color with a thin, terminal layer of light green. There is a minor nick to the terminal edge of the second largest crystal; otherwise, it is in excellent to pristine condition for the Tourmaline and pristine condition for the Smoky Quartz. Gerhard calls it "The Queen of Paprok." He had it stabilized and restored by an expert upon his return from Afghanistan to Germany.
    Overall measurements: 7.5 x 6.1 x 5.7 inches (19 x 15.5 x 14.4 cm)
