Description

Tourmaline (Elbaite)
Jenipapo Pegmatite Field, Itinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil
19 x 12 x 12 cm (7.48 x 4.72 x 4.72 in)

Unlike the majority of Brazilian Elbaite specimens that come from the famous localities throughout São José da Safira, this spectacular piece comes from the obscure gem-pegmatite of Jenipapo! The primary focus of the specimen is an incredibly robust crystal of Elbaite that is topped with a sharp, complex termination, well-formed all around, and accented with several stepped features; another thick Elbaite is presented at the foot of the main crystal with contrasting associations of Mica and Smoky Quartz. Each of the Elbaites are very lustrous and filled with a wine red hue that intensifies within some of the smaller, highly transparent terminations. Part of the main crystal's reverse side, however, grades to a gemmy, rusty-orange hue. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.

From the collection of Daniel "Dan" R. Kennedy.

More Information: This piece is in great condition. As can be the case with these larger Tourmaline specimens, this piece has four repairs and nine restorations. Luckily, the piece was expertly reconstructed, leaving most of the reparations virtually imperceivable under visible lighting.

Though minor and fairly technical, it should also be noted the base erroneously notes the Elbaite as a "variety" of Tourmaline, whereas it is actually a species within the Tourmaline Group.
