Description

TOURMALINE & QUARTZ - "THE PENCIL"
    The 18% Pocket, 2002
Pederneira Mine, São José da Safira, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Had this specimen come from any number of other mines, it would now be part of some very lovely jewelry. Such is the fate of most Tourmalines mined around the globe, but it is particularly the fate of material fine enough to fashion facetted gemstones - material identical to that seen here. Not a complicated specimen, the charm of "The Pencil" lies in the depth and purity of its color and the limpid transparency shown by much of the three crystals gracing the Smoky Quartz matrix prised from the wall of the "18% Pocket." Where the elongated prism emerges from the Quartz, its coloration is virtually all a uniform pink tint with only minor hints of blue on the exterior. An abrupt shift in pocket chemistry led to a simultaneous change in color and transparency to a clean teal blue with hints of green. Much of The Pencil's growth history is shrouded in this lovely blue, and it is only in the last stages of its growth that the blue was displaced in the scheme of things by a final burst of pink - a pink forming the 'eraser' of the pencil. Typical of the long 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) and thin 0.55 inches (1.4 cm) crystals from Pederneira, it has required professional restoration to regain all of its former splendor - a process well worth the effort in order to spare this magnificent study in lustrous, transparent color from the Philistines who would butcher it for the sake of rings, brooches and the like. The tip of the 'sidecar' crystal is missing; otherwise, the group is exactly like it was when formed so many millennia ago. This piece is in excellent condition and accompanied by a custom labeled base.
