Musonoi Mine, Kolwezi, Kolwezi District, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaïre)

The Congo, a name that conjures visions of: sluggish rivers of opaque green water, winding endlessly through endless miles of crocodile infested, steaming jungle; barefoot boys with worn AK-47's and an itch to try them out; and one of the richest mineral zones in the world. Were it not for these mineral riches, the locals would probably have the Congo all to themselves. Of those riches, Copper along with Cobalt, Tantalum and Uranium are the driving force behind whatever industry this area possesses. Torbernite is found in the mines here, typically in the kind of platy crystals exhibited by this matrix specimen. Thin Kelly green scales of Torbernite cover the tan and black matrix in sizes up to .56 inch (1.3 cm). That is an older specimen is supported by an accompanying label from the Carnegie Museum indicating that it has been on exhibit at the museum. Excellent condition.
    Overall measurements: 7 x 4 x 3.5 inches (17.8 x 10.2 x 8.9 cm).

Provenance: Collector's Edge, ex. Carnegie Museum [Hoppel # D1189]
