Casapalca Mine, Casapalca, Huarochiri Province, Lima Department, Peru

It seems that many of the most interesting specimens come from some of the most desolate places on the planet; places like Casapalca, Peru where the mine is located at 14,625' ASL (4,500 meters ASL) in an Andean valley. Casapalca is famous among collectors for the large and showy Tetrahedrite crystal groups that emerge from its depths. A fine example is this piece, showing well-formed and lustrous tetrahedral crystals up to 2 inches (5.0 cm) across on a matrix of massive Tetrahedrite and Pyrite. The black crystals are heavily striated, and several show some iridescent tarnish. There are one or two nicks, but the overall condition is excellent.
    Overall Measurements: 8.0 x 7.5 x 3.0 inches (20.3 x 19.1 x 7.6 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Williams Minerals [Hoppel #D1923]

    Estimate: $3,500 - $4,500.
