Description

    Tennantite
Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Although Tennantite and Tetrahedrite look alike, and both are part of the series: Tennantite-Tetrahedrite, the relative lack of Antimony minerals at Tsumeb is a pretty good indicator that this is much closer to the Tennantite-end of that series. As a Tennantite, it is quite notable, possessing tetrahedral crystals up to 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) on edge and many in the .75 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) size range. Broken surfaces on the back show shiny, black, metallic luster; in contrast to the dark gray and matte surface luster of the crystals. Tiny black spherules with an associated green mineral, presumably Malachite, speckle most of the faces of the Tennantite. Here and there, small clusters of white Quartz crystals are in attendance, along with an unidentified mineral of different crystal form and color, that bears a 'herring-bone' type of pattern on some of that other minerals crystal faces. Overall condition of this rather large specimen is excellent, with but an occasional ding or "wilber." This Tennantite is big enough to be a museum specimen and is a reminder of just how exceptional Tsumeb specimens can be.
