Baia Sprie Mine (Felsöbánya Mine), Baia Sprie, Maramure? Co., Romania

Eye shadow has a long and venerable connection with mining and minerals. The original version of "kohl" was in use as early as the Protodynastic Period in Egypt (~3,000 BC or 5,000 BP). That version was made of "powdered" Stibnite - the same Stibnite represented by this specimen from Baia Sprie in Romania. Most of the material mined is massive and without form, but, occasionally, open fissures in the mine would be lined with shining, metallic swords of Stibnite, waiting for a miner to carefully extract the specimen and save it for waiting buyers. Condition is all important, and miners soon learned that examples kept in excellent condition like this one would fetch top dollars on the specimen market. Here, three radiating groups of crystals intergrew as they sprouted from the walls of their dark home. The longest of the crystals seems to be around 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) long and are brilliantly lustrous. There is no matrix, but, rather, just the Stibnite balls intertwined with each other to create a great natural sculpture.
    Overall Measurements: 5.0 x 2.75 x 3.0 inches (12.7 x 6.99 x 7.62 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel #D1140]

    Estimate: $2,800 - $3,200.
