Description

    STIBNITE
Baia Sprie Mine (Felsöbánya mine), Baia Sprie (Felsöbánya), Maramures Co., Romania

The mines of Baia Sprie produce a wide variety of minerals, many of them of the sulfide persuasion: i.e. Galena (Lead Sulfide), Cinnabar (Mercury Sulfide), Chalcopyrite (Copper Iron Sulfide), and Pyrite (Iron Sulfide), etc., etc. Since Antimony forms various minerals in combination with Sulfur, it would be entirely in keeping with the above for Stibnite (Antimony Sulfide) to occur here as well. This specimen is proof. The Stibnites from here tend to form long needles of brilliant luster. What "makes" the specimen, it is the fact that these radiating groups chose to nest inside of a druzy Quartz vug, giving it the appearance of an Easter Egg of alien manufacture. The Quartz was deposited either on a mineral now dissolved away or as a lining of a cavity whose walls were later dissolved away. In both cases, this left a hollow shell perfectly suited to house the Stibnite deposited later in the sequence of geological events. The Stibnite needles extend up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) out from the gray Quartz walls and there are a few colorless Calcite crystals festooning the odd needle or two. At one end of the cavity is a yellowish deposit of undetermined composition that adds a little variety to the mix.
    Overall measurements: 4 x 2.75 x 2.5 inches (10.2 x 7.0 x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D1785]
