Description
StibniteWuning Mine (Wuling Mine; Qingjiang Mine), Qingjiang
Wuning Co., Jiujiang, Jiangxi
China
The superlative nature of this specimen cannot be overstated, and its key attributes serve to confirm its singular stature. The unique Stibnite "Sword" measures an astonishing 20.5 inches (52 cm) long, making it extremely large and dramatic. This single extended crystal came out of the "Best of Species" pocket in 2003 where it was immediately acquired by the legendary mineral connoisseur Dr. Steve Smale. Known for his decades long career in the hobby, as well as his extensive collection, Dr. Smale specialized in the minerals of China, of which this was his largest example. The production from the Jiangxi find has never been equaled. The combination of size, luster, sharpness, "sparkle" and geometry, as evidenced by this one of a kind offering, is unparalleled. This enormous piece boasts minimal damage, terminated crystals and striated columns featuring the classic "gun metal" bluish-gray coloration. Presented dramatically on a custom engraved acrylic base, this museum-quality specimen represents the iconic species, known so well from China, in rarefied form. The qualities of this combined with its significant provenance results in a highly collectible, and visually remarkable, example. This is a serious Stibnite for a serious collection.
Measurements: 20.47 x 2.01 x 0.89 inches (52.00 x 5.10 x 2.25 cm)
Provenance: Ex. Steve Smale Collection
