Description

STIBNITE
Herja Mine, Chiuzbaia (Kisbánya), Baia Mare (Nagybánya), Maramures Co., Romania

Long before Stibnite became a hot collector item, it was a hit with the ladies as the eyeliner known as kohl. Powdered Stibnite has been used there since around 3100 BC as the ingredient of this essential grooming aid. Big Stibnite plates are only infrequently offered on the market for the simple reason that they are difficult to remove and transport without damage, unlike their smaller brethren. This point doesn't even begin to address the fact that there are much fewer big plates to begin with. This plate is thickly forested with stout, metallic Stibnite prisms up to 2.25 inches (5.6 cm) in length, arranged in a crescent shaped pattern. They exhibit the characteristic stout cross-section and spear-shaped crystallization and darker, metallic luster common to Herja material. A few crystals show breaks, but most are in excellent condition. There is no matrix to speak of - just a large arching "bridge" of Stibnite crystals
Overall measurements: 14 x 11 x 5 inches (35.6 x 30.5 x 12.7 cm).

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D1695]
