Staurolite specimens are usually for sale at any gem and mineral show and for good reason - the natural "cross" shape often featured in the mineral specimens is hard to deny regardless of religious affiliation. The result of a phenomenon called "penetration" twinning, Staurolite crystals are prismatic in shape. In this example, the prismatic shape is clearly visible although the shape is more of an "X" than a cross. An interesting mineral no matter what, the specimen also glitters. Staurolite is the state mineral of Georgia.
