Believed to be named after the Latin word "spinella," meaning "thorn," in allusion to the sharp octahedral form of this mineral, Spinel is a gorgeous species of which the best specimens have undoubtedly hailed from Myanmar. This specimen of deep red and pink Spinel is a champion of aesthetics for all Mogok Township specimens, with a cascading arrangement of shining octahedrons flowing and diminishing down the matrix. The largest of these crystals is over 2 centimeters from tip-to-tip, a handsome size. The white marble matrix was perfectly prepared to emphasize the deep pink crystals, and serves as a contrasting backdrop for the stars of the show. This specimen has no repairs, and the crystals are in excellent condition.
