Description

    Smithsonite
Level 29, Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Just about every Zinc mine in creation has some Smithsonite in it. 99.9+ % of that Smithsonite is either unidentifiable or just plain ugly. Crystals of this fairly common ore are actually quite rare. A few places on the planet provided the ideal conditions for atypically large crystals of this mineral. A mine in central Namibia was one of those places. An example of that kind of growth can be seen in this specimen, which displays colorless crystals of Smithsonite up to 2.1 cm (.83 inches) across. The waxy luster is evenly distributed over all of the crystals in the group and for a little extra: there is a small, twinned Cerussite group, tucked into a hollow on the piece. There is virtually no matrix, only the remains of a bit of limestone wall rock on the back. Condition appears to be pristine with the only nicks confined to the sides and back of the piece.
    Measurements: 6.0 x 3.7 x 2.6 inches (15.2 x 9.5 x 6.7 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance:
    Rainbow of Africa Collection

    Estimate: $2,500 - $3,500.
