Berg Aukas, Grootfontein District, Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia

The largest and most perfect Smithsonite specimens known have come from the mines of north central Namibia, specifically those of Tsumeb and Berg Aukas. Here, sinkholes and caverns in the limestone have been invaded and mineralized by metal bearing fluids from below, exposing ore bodies that subsequently weathered, leaving crystalline deposits of metallic compounds. In the case of Berg Aukas, these were chiefly: Lead, Zinc and Vanadium. Reactions between the limestone host rock and Zinc bearing water produced giant and exceptionally perfect Smithsonite crystal groups, one of which is seen here. It is composed of a large number of tan Smithsonite crystals of considerable size, some up to 1 ΒΌ inches (3.2 cm) from end to end. The cores of the tan groups are also Smithsonite, but of a dark gray color. This material makes up most of the dark matrix of the piece. On the backside is a white, crustiform patch of Willemite: Zinc Silicate, which fluoresces under SW Ultra-Violet light. The group is in excellent to pristine condition. The mine is no longer in production, so available material is all coming from existing collections.
    Overall Measurements: 6.02 x 3.34 x 2.74 inches (15.3 x 8.5 x 6.97 cm)
