Description

    Smithsonite Cast after Limestone
Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Weird but cool is probably the best short description of the form exhibited by this Smithsonite "cast." Painted metallic black, it would be a dead ringer for a nickel iron meteorite. The unusual shape is the result of Smithsonite crystallizing inside a limestone cavity like frost in a freezer. After the interior coating formed, acidic water underground dissolved the limestone enough for the cast of the interior to be removed intact. One end has been breached in order to view the interior, itself liberally festooned with rounded Smithsonite forms of considerable delicacy. Other than a bit of wear on a point or two, the only damage is from where the cast was breached, to open it for display of the inside.
    Comes with a custom stand.
    Measurements: 12.2 x 8.7 x 4.8 inches (30.9 x 22.0 x 12.3 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Rainbow of Africa Collection
