Tazna Mine, Cerro Tazna, Atocha-Quechisla District, Nor Chichas Province, Potosí Department, Bolivia

Mention Siderite to any given mineral collector and be prepared for the yawn that follows comprehension. Since Siderite always comes in some variant of yellow, or more likely brown, the choice in colors can leave something to be desired. Managing to overcome that particular handicap by sheer brute force is this HUGE example from Tazna in Bolivia. Here two positively enormous pyramids of Siderite dominate a rolling landscape of large and well-shaped Siderite rhombs that look like Smithsonite from Tsumeb. The two giant crystals measure approximately 2.75 inches (6.9 cm) across and are in perfect condition. Luster is a strange greasy to vitreous one, very similar to the Tsumeb Smithsonite mentioned above. This is most likely due to the presence of many complex growth features on all of the exposed surfaces. This outstanding specimen was collected in the early 1900s and is pictured in the Mineralogical Record, Vol. 28, #3, p. 207 (May/June 1997). It has a custom acrylic base.
    Overall Measurements: 5.9 x 5.59 x 3.41 inches (15.0 x 14.2 x 8.68 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
