Tantara Mine
    Katanga (Shaba)
    Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

It should be noted that Shattuckite specimens have been coming out of the Copper deposits of Katanga for many years but never as thick and as "pure" as the pieces that came out of the 2013-2014 window, which includes this massive example. Only three truly museum size Shattuckites were brought out of a hole intact, dug by hand under the supervision of an experienced miner. Purportedly one of the largest from the remote locality this massive example is a show stopper. Given that the Tantara "Pit" has been dwindling, it is not likely specimens of this caliber which are noticeably different from the Shattuckites found in Namibia will be seen again. This is without doubt one of the best ever to come out of Congo.

Shattuckite is a rare Copper silicate mineral highly regarded for its vivid blue coloration. This aesthetic example is no exception and delivers on both color and form. The large specimen exhibits an incredible true blue in the center with a lighter sky blue on the exterior. Many well-formed, orthorhombic crystals are nestled in this vug. The rim exhibits the internal structure of the crystal form characterized by sliced radial formations. The crystals radiate outward as tiny "splinters" compacted together forming a three-dimensional central point which has created ball-like masses known as spherulites. This example has a crack near the edge on the vug; otherwise, it is in pristine condition with a silky appearance. The matrix is a stunning light blue sprinkled with rusty brown Copper. Definitely a collector specimen of the highest order, this "blue beauty" is not likely to disappoint. It hit the mineral trifecta for color, size and quality.
