Maravillas Mine, Naica, Mun. de Saucillo, Chihuahua, Mexico

The miners of the Naica area in Chihuahua seem to have an uncanny knack for locating Selenite caves. Either that, or the Selenite caves have an uncanny knack for locating ore-bodies to hang out with. Whichever it might be, there is no doubt that there have been some very nice ice-clear crystals that have made their way out of the mines and into more than a few collections. The Maravillas Mine produced this example featuring 10, or more, stout, wedge or diamond shaped Selenite crystals of limpid transparency, arranged in random order across an orange gossan matrix. The largest of the "diamonds" stretches some 7 inches (17.8 cm) from tip to tip. Condition is excellent, especially since most examples this large have many of the Selenite tips: "bashed." File notes indicate that this was from the collection at the Utah Museum of Natural History.
    Overall measurements: 14 x 10 x 6 inches (35.6 x 25.4 x 15.2 cm).

Provenance: David Crawford Minerals, ex. Utah Museum of Natural History [Hoppel # D1469]
