Blue Sky Prospect, Santa Cruz, Mun. de Santa Cruz, Sonora, Mexico

Mexico is one of those intriguing places where strange things come out of the back country, are around for a while then vanish, leaving little or no data as to their origins or the potential for further production. The very odd Schorl Tourmalines of the Blue Sky Prospect are a prime example of the type. There are generally two styles of Schorl from this locality: a matrix variety or a stalactititc type. This specimen is the former, consisting of a slab of 'wall rock' (a portion of the wall of an open fissure) hosting a mix of Schorl Tourmaline, off-white Feldspar and an occasional, colorless Quartz crystal. The Tourmalines appear as dead black, radiating groups of freestanding crystals with an unusual hackly exterior surface texture. From the find by Dan Belsher, this is the one and only time these unusual Tourmalines ever made it to market. The sides of the crystals possess an unusual velvet like luster - very strange for Tourmaline. The largest radiating crystal group is 1.57 inches (4 cm) in height. Condition is excellent. Dan is gone now, and the secret of their location may well be gone with him.
    Overall measurements: 7.0 x 2.4 x 3.8 inches (17.8 x 6 x 9.6 cm)
