Description

    RUTILE
Graves Mountain, Lincoln Co., Georgia, USA

The search for aluminum silicates for high temperature refractories and ceramics led several mining companies to quarry Graves Mountain for tonnage quantities of Kyanite, a source for those silicates. During operations there, a zone containing bladed Kyanite and giant crystals of Rutile (a form of Titanium Oxide) were uncovered. Some of the Rutile ended up in the hands of mineral dealers, and the demand took off. The Rutile is very distinctive, taking the form of large, blocky crystals with a metallic luster. Many if not most, of the crystals required the application of razor blades to flake off thin coatings of a black mineral. Most of the crystals are twinned giving rise to multiple faces and re-entrant angles. Few had any matrix as such, just traces of Kyanite blades. This one has no accessory minerals. The metallic luster obscures visibility of the deep red reflections from internal fractures just under the surface of the crystals. Most, including this one show some fracturing; probably the result of damage incurred during mining operations. Condition is very good with points off for broken areas on the back. The mine has been "remediated," which means no more mining operations - no more specimens.
