Rutile-included Quartz crystals have been very much in demand the last few years for jewelry and lapidary purposes. Normally, all of the Rutile needles are completely enclosed in the clear Quartz crystals. Once in a rare while one of them surfaces that is 'half and half' - some Rutile in the Quartz crystal and some outside in free space. This version of that phenomenon starts with the simultaneous crystallization of both Hematite and Rutile. The crystal structure of both minerals is such that some of the Rutile is incorporated within the Hematite as both grew. Later on, the slightly smoky Quartz began its growth incorporating some of the Rutile inside of it. The bottom of the Hematite and one end of the Quartz are incomplete because they are very likely to have been attached to the wall of the cavity where all of this happened.
