This specimen shows very well the growth sequence of these fascinating, Rutile included Quartz crystals. Close inspection reveals that the small black Hematite crystals that form the centers of the Rutile 'stars' are deposited first, on the walls of fissures, then the golden Rutile grows outward from these centers forming stellate, epitaxial groups of delicate needles. Finally; Silica bearing solutions initiate the growth of Quartz crystals that enclose the Rutile/Hematite 'stars'. In the case of this example, growth of the Smoky Quartz crystals was interrupted before they could completely engulf the Rutile/Hematite growths, resulting in only partial inclusion in the Quartz. It is extremely rare to find such partial intergrowths and they are highly sought after. Some very minor 'nicks' to some Quartz crystals, otherwise fine. 7 ¼ x 5 ¼ x 4 inches deep with custom base.
