Description

    RUBELLITE & QUARTZ
Jonas Mine, Conselheiro Pena, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The process of crystal growth in pegmatite 'pockets' involves many variables. Sometimes a pocket will contain only one crystal of a particular mineral. Sometimes, as is the case with this specimen, there will be many, scattered in profusion over a broad expanse of matrix. This haphazard grouping of magenta prisms is complexly interwoven with a matrix of Lepidolite Mica and white Cleavelandite blades. The largest Tourmaline appears to be "bent" as others have been fractured during growth and subsequently "healed" by continued growth. These Tourmalines measure a little over 2.76 inches (7 cm) in length and some 0.63 inches (1.6 cm) in diameter. As noted above, sometimes there is only a single crystal of one mineral, while other minerals show up in large quantities. Here, the solitary member of the mix is a doubly-terminated and colorless Quartz crystal that is approximately 1.57 inches (4 cm) long and quite transparent. All Tourmalines show the uniform cranberry red color consistent with Jonas material from the same pocket that produced "The Rocket" and other world-class specimens. Many of the numerous Tourmalines are terminated and their luster varies from glassy to slightly 'frosted'- a common occurrence with this many crystals in a group. This piece is in fine to excellent condition with a few broken crystals.
    Overall measurements: 5.4 x 3.3 x 3.3 inches (13.7 x 8.3 x 8.5 cm)
