Wutong Mine, Liubao, Cangwu Co., Wuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China

The giant Rhodochrosite crystals found in the Wutong Mine are totally unlike ones from other parts of the planet. The differences, in form and luster, are some of the first things you notice. Easily recognizable as a rhombic crystal, it has many parallel faces. These faces are best identified when illuminated at the proper angle: the corresponding faces "light up" in unison - a phenomenon that is illustrated in the photograph. Its luster is a strange mix of both glassy and almost matte surfaces, again, best seen, in reflection, at certain angles. The bright pink color is tinted, or moderated, by both internal inclusions and the crystal faces, to yield a pastel pink coloration with orange undertones. Almost a "floater," there is but one attachment point on the bottom. Unearthed in November 2014, it went straight into a Chinese dealers personal collection. The Rhodochrosite is in pristine condition and has a custom base.
