Hedgehog Pocket, Sweet Home Mine (Home Sweet Home Mine), Mount Bross, Alma District, Park Co., Colorado

Painting has its Picasso, sculpture: Michaelangelo, and mineral collecting has: The Sweet Home Mine. We have a large plate from the Sweet Home Mine up for auction. Like paintings and other art forms, the same artist often varies their works based on whim. At the Sweet Home Mine, Nature has provided similar variations from one fissure to the next. This large plate from the "Hedgehog Pocket" shows the characteristic pattern of the pocket. It covers a large area and that area is peppered with many, (80+) sharp, simple rhombs of bright pink-red Rhodochrosite placed in and on; a forest of colorless Quartz needles with occasional dark clusters of Tetrahedrite intermixed with brassy, "micro-Pyrites". The Rhodochrosites measure up to ¾ inch (1.9 cm) across and virtually all are simple in form and on that boundary between transparent and translucent. Luster is glassy and all are alike in that respect as well. Accompanying the "Rhodos" and the Tetrahedrite and the Quartz, are a couple of doubly terminated Hübnerite crystals measuring up to 1½ inches (3.8 cm) in length, hiding within the needle Quartz. Condition of everything is pristine: a tribute to the care taken by the Collectors Edge team when they removed the plate. There is a custom stand that allows the specimen to "soar".
    Overall measurements: 17 x 11.5 x 3 inches (43.2 x 29.2 x 7.6 cm).

    Provenance: Collector's Edge [Hoppel # D1183]
