Description

    RHODOCHROSITE
Grube Wolf, Herdorf, Siegerland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Contrary to what most of the public may believe, Rhodochrosite is not the trademarked property of the State of Colorado. In fact, this roseate mineral was first described from material from Romania in 1813, which is about 63 years before Colorado became a state. All of which leads to our next point: there are some very fine Rhodochrosites that have emerged from the mines of Europe over the years. This is one of them. It consists of several rounded aggregates of radiating crystals perched conspicuously on a matrix of ochre and black, limonitic gossan, shot through with veins of black Pyrolusite and a white mineral of indeterminate composition. The major group measures some 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) across and displays the "strawberry jam" color and druzy luster that are normal for Grube Wolf material. In addition to the main mass, there are several, smaller spherical crystal groups dotting the matrix as well. There hasn't been any serious production of things like this for some years now, which results in choice groups like this one being 'repatriated' back to Europe. There are two unidentified accession labels: "11.12.10 H 4.76" and "108." This European classic is in excellent condition and has a custom acrylic base.
    Overall Measurements: 4.31 x 2.38 x 2.26 inches (10.97 x 6.05 x 5.75 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. Dave New collection [Hoppel #D1732]
