N'Chwaning Mine, Kuruman, Cape Province, South Africa
Manganese Mines are in general, some of the dirtiest, most unrewarding places to look for mineral specimens. This rule was severely tested when miners at the Hotazel Mine started finding transparent rose-red crystals that turned out to be Rhodochrosite. In short order the ore-body at Hotazel was finished and operations at the nearby N'Chwaning Mine started up. The ore-bodies were similar and so were the Rhodochrosite specimens. It looked like there would be an endless supply...and then the Rhodochrosites ran out. The productive zones simply: stopped. This reniform specimen dusted with black Manganite crystals was produced before the bottom fell out some 20+ years ago. Judging from the back side, this 'Rhodo' was deposited as a coating over some other material now dissolved or broken away. The top surface is a typical curving aggregate of radiating micro-crystals each of which contributes a little reflected flash from its tiny termination, which is why the luster is so strange. In transmitted light, the almost transparent red comes through like an auto taillight. Collectors have been waiting 20 years for more. It hasn't happened; meanwhile specimens like this keep going up in value. There is no damage and the condition is excellent. 2 ½ x 1 ¾ x ½ inch thick.

    Estimate: $6,200 - $6,500.
