Description
RhodochrositeSweet Home Mine, Mount Bross, Alma Mining District, Park County, Colorado, USA
8.4 x 8.2 x 7.3 cm (3.31 x 3.23 x 2.87 in)
Rhodochrosite from the Sweet Home Mine is considered to be some of the best in the world for their beautifully formed rhombohedral crystals and highly desirable watermelon red color, arguably surpassing every other find of Rhodochrosite around the world. This specimen in particular was excavated from the famous Crystal Wall Pocket (Museum Pocket) in the 1990s; most of the pocket has been reconstructed and put on display in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, demonstrating what these Rhodochrosite crystals looked like in their "natural habitat." Hitting all the marks in size and color, this specimen has two massive intergrown crystals that reach up to a whopping 7.6 centimeters in length and are nicely presented atop a minor Tetrahedrite matrix. Most of the matrix, on the back and underside of the specimen, will fluoresce bright orange under UV light.
Ex. Brent J. McCormack collection.
