RhodochrositeOppu Mine, Nishimeya-mura, Nakatsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture, Japan
15.8 x 11.0 x 4.7 cm (6.22 x 4.33 x 1.85 in)
An excellent plate of Rhodochrosite from arguably one of the most widely recognized Japanese localities-the Oppu Mine. The piece is topped with a rolling field of salmon-pink, translucent crystals with a signature botryoidal shape, all draped over a matrix of Pyrite, Quartz, and other sulphides. The bubbly clusters of Rhodochrosite tightly interlock with one another, giving the piece a three-dimensional topography. Minor patches of glistening Pyrite peak out across some of the Rhodochrosite groups, given a nice offset to the specimen.
