Description

Rhodochrosite
Oppu Mine, Nishimeya-mura, Nakatsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture, Japan
15.6 x 9.3 x 5.9 cm (6.14 x 3.66 x 2.32 in)

A wonderful piece from Mr. Witters's curated sub-collection of worldwide minerals. This older cabinet specimen was found in the late 1800s and displays a richly saturated, translucent band of reddish pink Rhodochrosite in classic botryoidal form, blanketing the top side of a host rock matrix. The rolling, textured display gently catches light, giving the piece a velvety and softly glowing appearance. While Japan is not a very large producer of specimen-grade minerals, the Rhodochrosites from this old mine are fairly rare and instantly recognizable amongst collectors.

Ex. George R. Witters collection.
