    Rhodochrosite & Quartz
Home Sweet Home Mine, Mount Bross, Alma District, Park Co., USA

We've commented before about "floater" specimens: they are crystals, or groups of crystals, that show no place where they were connected to the wall of a cavity, or fissure, during growth. This is a colorful, and unusual, example of that phenomenon: a strawberry-hued Rhodochrosite covered slab. Not visible, but obviously there, is a fragment of the local wall rock that serves as the "core" for the piece. It has been completely overcoated by a mix of tiny Tetrahedrite and Pyrite crystals, along with a swarm, of dark-pink rhombs of Rhodochrosite up to 0.8 inches (2 cm) across. The Rhodochrosite layer was next "frosted" with thousands of colorless, needlelike Quartz crystals. Nowhere on the piece is there a visible point of attachment giving the group a 360-degree visibility. Luster of the Rhodochrosite varies from glassy on one side of the slab to waxy on the other. Condition is pristine with no visible damage to the Rhodochrosite and the Quartz crystals are too small to tell. It is accompanied by a custom acrylic stand.
    Overall Measurements: 7.7 x 6.4 x 2.9 inches (19.5 x 16.2 x 7.3 cm)

    Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000.
