Mina da Panasqueira, Couto Mineiro da Panasqueira, Panasqueira, Covilhã, Distrito de Castelo Branco, Portugal

The Mines of Panasqueira have been quite prolific over the years, but virtually all of the specimens from there are minerals related to the ores. This is one of the few that exhibits ore minerals in a supporting role. The Quartz crystal comprising the lot is notable for several reasons: First, it is extremely large for Panasqueira and transparent to boot; Second, it is a unique example of a "phantom" crystal - one that visibly contains other minerals that deposited upon a exterior surface of the growing crystal before it finished its growth. As a result, those other minerals (in this case: Arsenopyrite, Chalcopyrite and Sphalerite) are trapped within the Quartz crystal like bugs in Amber. The reason that the "phantom" crystals only appear on one side of the Quartz is that the Quartz was attached to the wall of a fissure and the side with the other minerals was the 'up' side that served to catch a gentle 'snow-fall' of the other minerals while it was still growing. It is reportedly from a European collection and probably dates back several decades at minimum.
