    Quartz Stalactites
Lake Otjikoto, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Many are the stalactites of the world, but not many are made of Quartz: Calcite seems to be much more common. There is a good reason for this; Calcite can be deposited at normal surface temperatures and pressures. For Quartz to deposit takes much higher temperatures and pressures; the kind of conditions normally found much deeper underground. Regarding the alleged locality of Lake Otjikoto. This is somewhat suspicious since the lake is part of a limestone cave system - not your first choice for Quartz of any sort. It is far more probable that the specimen came from a locality nearby, where conditions would be more conducive to its formation. In any event, the specimen is a sizable group of Quartz stalactites arranged in a parallel configuration. The white color is shaded in places by a small amount of Iron, or Manganese Oxide, coatings between the sparkling, stubby Quartz crystals that cover the original surfaces of the piece. There are signs of the group's attachment on the sides and back/bottom, otherwise this large cabinet specimen is in excellent condition.
