DescriptionQUARTZ PSEUDOMORPH after ANHYDRITE
Ametista do Sul, Alto Uruguai Region, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Not all of the 'Amethyst' geodes mined near this little town have just Amethyst crystals in them. Some, like this one, originally contained fan-shaped aggregates of Anhydrite, the anhydrous version of Calcium Sulfate. A change in the neighborhood chemistry resulted in the Anhydrite being faithfully replaced by Quartz. This is where matters stood when the miners drilled into the "geode" containing this wonder. The tan pseudomorphs sprout from a thin, gray layer of Quartz, which was part of the wall of the geode before the miners separated the piece from the surrounding basalt flow. Some of the Quartz replacements show breakage of tips but it takes a while to figure out, just which ones. Condition is actually quite excellent: a tribute to the care taken when removing the piece.
